Biological Buffers
Biological Buffers
Biological buffers are typically added to cell culture media to maintain the physiological pH of a culture and to avoid undesirable fluctuations of pH due to cell metabolism that may have negative effects on cell parameters.
A variety of buffering agents are available for use in cell culture; however, as cell types vary in their sensitivity to different buffer species, care must be taken in choosing buffers and their concentrations to avoid toxic reactions.
Atlanta Biologicals offers the 2 most commonly used biological buffers: Sodium bicarbonate is incorporated into the formulation of most classical cell culture media. HEPES is frequently added to cell culture media in applications when pH maintenance is critical and normal bicarbonate buffering is not sufficient.
