Cells in culture require a source of nutrition, typically provided by cell culture media. The majority of these media require the addition of animal serum for cells to obtain the proper nutrients to grow satisfactorily. Serum is an important source of proteins, lipids, vitamins, amino acids, salts, minerals and other components necessary for in vitro growth of cells.

An extensive range of animal sera is available to suit every research laboratory’s requirements. All of our animal sera are also available heat inactivated.

Fetal Bovine Serum
Fetal bovine serum (FBS) is the most widely used serum due to its high nutritional content. Atlanta Biologicals offers several different FBS grades, as well as specialty fetal bovine sera such as Heat Inactivated FBS, Hybridoma Qualified FBS, Charcoal/Dextran Treated FBS, Dialyzed FBS and Gamma Irradiated FBS in order to accommodate even the most demanding cell lines and laboratory applications.

Newborn Calf Serum
Newborn calf serum (NBC) is collected from healthy, inspected calves that are less than 14 days old. NBC provides many of the same nutrients as FBS with slightly higher protein levels. For many cell lines, NBC can be used as an alternative to the more costly FBS.

Bovine Calf Serum
Bovine calf serum (BCS) is obtained from healthy, inspected calves 12 to 20 weeks old. Although BCS has a lower nutritional value than FBS or NBC, it can be used for a variety of less demanding cell lines.

Iron-Supplemented Calf Serum
Iron-supplemented calf serum (ISCS) is produced from serum of 12 to 20 weeks old formula fed calves, supplemented with iron. Formula fed calf serum has exceptionally high levels of transferrin, and therefore the capacity to bind higher levels of iron. After supplementation with a ferric salt, our ISCS contains up to four times as much available iron and transferrin as FBS. It can produce growth curves comparable to that of FBS in many cell culture systems.

Donor Bovine Serum
Donor bovine serum (DBS) is collected from healthy and routinely tested donor animals. The donor cattle are carefully selected and maintained in closed herds under veterinary care and diagnostic protocols. They are used exclusively for the production of donor bovine products and are not medicated or fed sub-therapeutic levels of antibiotics.

Donor Horse Serum
Donor horse serum (DHS) is obtained from closed donor horse herds that receive regular veterinary inspection and care. The donor animals are all gelded draft horses in order to limit lot-to-lot hormone level variations. They are fed a special diet and are fasted prior to bleeding to reduce lipid concentrations.
DHS will support the growth of a wide variety of mammalian cells, providing a cost-effective alternative for FBS. DHS is often used in bovine virus research applications since it does not contain bovine antibodies.

Plasma Derived Donor Horse Serum
Plasma derived Donor Horse Serum (PDDHS) is produced from donor horse plasma by removing the platelets without the release of platelet derived growth factor into the plasma. The plasma is then re-calcified using calcium chloride.

Mouse Serum
Mouse serum is obtained from U.S. laboratory animals that have been raised under strict barrier conditions and are monitored on a regular basis for murine pathogens. Controlled standard diets and adherence to strict collection and production protocols minimize lot-to-lot variations.
