HBSS

Balanced Salts are a combination of inorganic salts and frequently a carbohydrate as an energy source. Balanced Salt Solutions are generally used as a cell rinsing solution and for short term maintenance of mammalian cells while the cells are manipulated outside of their regular growth environment. The solutions provide cells with the proper osmotic pressure and protect them from sharp pH fluctuations during laboratory manipulations. Balanced Salts Solutions supplemented with calcium and magnesium salts are commonly used to wash and re-suspend cells during the dissociation process.

D-PBS
Dulbecco’s Phosphate-Buffered Saline (D-PBS) contains potassium chloride, monobasic potassium phosphate, sodium chloride, and dibasic sodium phosphate. The liquid D-PBS is also available with calcium and magnesium salts.

EBSS
Earle’s Balanced Salt Solution (EBSS) contains inorganic salts and a carbohydrate (D-glucose). Formulations with and without phenol red are available. The powdered EBSS is offered without calcium and magnesium salts, whereas the liquid EBSS is available with and without calcium and magnesium salts.
