Insect cell gene expression systems have emerged since the early 1980s as one of the most popular expression systems for the production of recombinant proteins. Since insect cells have the ability to glycosylate and further modify proteins, they are increasingly replacing bacterial expression systems.

Insect cell cultures are also used in many other research applications, predominantly in the fields of entomology, phytopathology, toxicology, neurobiology and molecular genetics.

Atlanta Biologicals offers a variety of classical media for insect cell culture in a liquid and a pre-mixed powder form. All of these media can also be customized to your specifications by our custom media manufacturing department.

Grace’s
Grace’s Insect Medium was originally developed in the early 1960s to support the growth of cells derived from Antheraea eucalypti. With the addition of serum, it is now widely used for the culture of various lepidopteran and some dipteran cell lines.

IPL-41
IPL-41 Insect Medium was formulated by Weiss et al. in the early 1980s as a modification of Goodwin’s original IPL formulation. It was designed for the large scale growth of cells derived from Spodoptera frugiperda and for the production of baculovirus. IPL-41 is typically supplemented with serum, and is used for the culture of lepidopteran cell lines and propagation of viruses in these cells.

TNM-FH
TNM-FH Insect Medium, a modification of Grace’s Insect Medium, was originally developed by Hink in 1970 to support the growth of cells derived from Trichoplusia ni. When supplemented with serum, it is suitable for a wide variety of lepidopteran cells lines.

Schneider’s Drosophila
Schneider’s Drosophila Medium was formulated and later modified by Schneider for the culture of cells derived from Drosophila melanogaster. With the addition of serum, it is now widely used to support the growth of both primary and established cell lines derived from Drosophila spp. and several other dipterans.
